What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy is a term which refers to any of a
number of neurological disorders which permanently affect muscle coordination and body movement. These are non-progressive disorders, meaning they do not worsen over time.
Cerebral palsy is not caused by irregularities in the muscles or nerves, but rather by abnormalities in the parts of the brain that control muscle movement. The majority of children who have cerebral palsy are born with it, although it may not be identified until months or even years later.
Cerebral palsy may be caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain, birth trauma,
delivery mistakes, premature delivery, and certain infections.
Generally speaking, most initial symptoms of cerebral palsy will present themselves by the time a child is 3 years old. Some symptoms may include the lack of muscle coordination when the child performs voluntary movements, walking on the toes, muscle tone that is too stiff or too floppy, exaggerated reflexes and stiff or tight muscles, problems with balance, or walking with one foot or one leg dragging. The severity of symptoms may range from a child who is generally “clumsy” to a child who cannot perform coordinated movements at all.
At this time, there is no cure for cerebral palsy. Treatment is available that can improve a child’s abilities, including physical therapy, speech therapy, medication and surgery. If treatment is started early enough and if the particular case is not too severe, a child may recover some motor skills and also the ability to communicate.
Medical Malpractice and Cerebral Palsy
We place our trust in medical professionals while we are under their care. When this trust is breached we should have the right to take legal action and ensure that they are held responsible for their conduct through a medical malpractice lawsuit. If your child is suffering from developmental delays or a movement disorder, cerebral palsy and medical malpractice could be to blame.
If you believe that medical malpractice may have led to your child’s disorder, contact a medical malpractice attorney as soon as possible. As a victim of medical malpractice, you have the right to take action against the medical professional who is responsible for your child’s condition. You may be facing extensive medical bills and continued medical care, and a medical malpractice lawyer can help ensure that you recover the monetary compensation you need to pay for these expenses.
